You actually hit the nail on the head. The best musicians are not winning these auditions. My wife calls them "tuba jocks" and I tend to agree with her. They have tremendous technical abilities and can literally blow the walls down but when it comes to playing something musically that's another story.
Some of us are still naive enough to think that somewhere out there is a group of musicians willing to give another musician a chance at one of those orchestral jobs. Perhaps wishful thinking?
