The bell ringing is a real anoying problem to me, too. I haven't had a customer willing to spend the money on annealing a bell then having it polished and relacquered. So, I can't say for sure it solves that problem. I've seen hard and soft bells do the same thing.
On old Yorks and Conns, I've started to anneal the bell seam areas to purple as a matter of default. I do that to prevent any cracking in the brazed seam. I find that the rolling out will bring a purple anneal back toa nice hardness. We have some trumpet and trombone customers that will have us rebuild brand new horns for them. Part of the job they request is having the bell annealed. We use a paste that acts as a heat sink around the rim. That keeps the solder from melting. Later. Matt
