I'm not sure how much changing the inside shape of the mouth would help lip slurs anyway, since everything on the tuba is so much bigger than the trumpet.

I agree with you that moving the toungue around during pitch changes can only hurt tone quality.

I'm not even sure how much of an "assist" this toungue-movement technique actually offers trumpet players, and I personally believe that it's a bit of a "Dumbo's feather" thing.

Lip slurs are a matter of TIMING, BALANCE, and FINESSE - perhaps like walking a tightrope. Once someone gets their timing, balance, and finesse within a certain fine line, that fine line finally seems to the person who has mastered it as if that line is a mile wide.
