Honestly, even tho some got into the weeds a little, I do appreciate your comments. It is pretty much what I suspected - there is no one path. I am a little nervous about the no college approach, altho I do comprehend what RA is trying to say. And if you knew how hard it is to find decent tuba instruction even at the intermediate level in the wilds of the US, it would make you nervous too to think about finding a single person to trust for someone's professional future.
