I'm not advising against "college", but if one truly aspires to become a "professional", one should seek out study with a proven professional (who stays at the top of their game), rather than simply a degreed studio teacher who is referred to as a "fine player".
This can happen within the college experience if enough investigation is involved in one's choice.
