As far as scanners goes, be careful. See if you can run a test before you buy. I've been scanning in brass band parts (for archiving--you never know when a part's going to go missing) and had picked up a new Canon USB 2.0 scanner. While the scanning speed's not too awful as personal scanners go, there's this very time-consuming "Adjusting Lamp" cycle before each scan that will drive you nuts.

I eventually ditched the Canon scanner and went with an old Artec that's probably about 8 years old. SCSI interface, nice snappy operation (throughput is almost 3x that of the Canon). Funny thing is that I paid more for the Canon than I paid for the Artec.
