1/ Put a light coating of woodwind cork grease or petroleum jelly on the corks. This, if this is a problem, will eliminate the horrible SQUEEAAKK (if applicable in your case).

2/ Have someone attach a handle to the UPPER SIDE of the mute (if there is not a handle already there), so you can manage it. An old-fashioned window pull (as is used on a window in a house) works fine.

3/ Set the tuba on the floor in front of you to insert and remove the mute.

4/ Keep the mute next to you on a chair seat, so it is within easy reach. (Twist your arm upside down when you grab the handle.)

5/ Please accept my apology if none of these suggestions are neither applicable nor helpful.
