my advice(unsolicited I know)?
1) get involved in a good community band/orchestra, and if the ensembles at your school really DO suck, stay in ONLY whatever it takes to keep you eligible for applied lessons
2) if you have been an ed. major, I STRONGLY suggest you consider if the people you go to school with are the type of folks you'd have to regard as colleagues for the rest of your career. If you find it tough to co-exist now, imagine how you might feel when someone like that is teaching in your district and THEY get the adjudicator gigs for festivals and competition....or when THEY get the tenure while you are still teaching part time at 5 different schools.
