There are good players who have payed their dues on the turf. Really good players. They stuck a little closer to Joe's statements, though, mainly becasue they would work as much as possible, try their best at school, and try to improve themselves as much as possible on the tuba. Two guys I know have worked very hard like this to succeed and it did take a while. Success is not overnight.
I bet if you asked both of them the value of their undergrad degree and how much it helped with their playing, you would be very suprised. They sat in a room, practiced, and envisioned where they wanted to be. It didn't matter what the groups around them sounded like.
