Perhaps the committees are opting for maturity in not only playing, but personality. After all, a player that's been smacked around a bit professionally will likely have different response than a player fresh out of the practice room. More likely, they won't put themselves in a position to be smacked around.

Perhaps they want someone that has had all of the experiences that come with a pro gig: union difficulties, tired rep, a guest conductor with a non-existent beat pattern, egos of other musicians, playing the Nutcracker 25 times EVEY YEAR and still making it sound fresh, sightreading pops concerts behind a person that was modestly popular 25 years ago, and a host of other things that have little to do with the music, and everything to do with being a professional. Perhaps THAT'S the maturity the committees are seeking. And since the auditions are behind a screen, how much more important does a good, clean resume become in the selection process?

No answers from me, just musings.
