very similar to the (oft-heard) claim "my tuba's best" ... NOW I totally understand.

Sean, with all due respect, your insistence totally begs the question. And not once, but twice?

try this example to clarify:

Question: "Why is the traffic light red?"
Answer: "Because its red!"

In the same way, saying audition winners won because they played best is simply re-stating the obvious, or begging the question.

I don't really have any personally wested interest if (for example) the New York gig goes to a twenty-two year-old student from some pre-eminent college studio or to the most popular old-fart major-or-regional-orchestra-pro, even though I know Yankee fans who'd play the shit outta that job there, and Sox fans who'd be more likely to audition. I just wonder if some players opt out of either auditioning or responding to invites because of the whole traditional wisdom thing. Maybe it'd be easier to discuss "how many best auditionees won't choose to fit on the head of a pin"
