My old Zeiss has a bore of around .890", and it could take plenty of air. The King sousaphone I was using has the smallest bore of all the tubas in the school, but it could take every brick of wind I could throw at it (yes, it was possible to play louder than the whole drumline).

A modifier I'll add to the question would be referring to tasteful sound. It's easier to get tasteless on my Zeiss than on the King. What's the biggest difference? Offhand, I'd say the bell's flare. Probably a whole lot of other factors enter into it, too.

As far as bore vs overall size, I'd go with the overall size. The bigger horn usually will be able to handle larger wavefronts.

Thanks for the forum that allows me to say things that would, uh, bore a date (pun unintended, but noted!),
Leland
