The timbral quality is affected by the size and shape of the oral cavity. You can actually control the pitch of the timbre. As you close the embouchure down to create an 'EE' timbre you create a high pitch. By opening the embouchure up to 'OO' 'A' 'AH' 'OH' the pitch is progressively lower. If you listen closely you can discern the actual pitches. and then play melodies, scales etc.

Perhaps one of our more technically inclined posters can explain it more clearly than I just did. I find it way easier to do than to describe.
