Dear SHS Tubamaster,
I've taken that same curiosity a step further, I've astually built three PLASTIC (not fiberglass) concert tubas and done some interesting sounding experiments. unfortunately, even with a great Meinel bell aboard, the truth is that only brass sounds exactally like brass!
The good nesw is that you can sound better then a fiberglass sousaphone through a PLASTIC tuba. In fast I have fooled meany very knowledgeable experts who could hardly tell the difference untill I played solo for them. In ensomble It's lack of over tones and "over-ring" are covered up.
So there yiou have it; you can play a big tuba that weighs thirteen pounds and sounds electric, or you can carry a dent magnent for about ninteen OR you can carrsy a twentytwo poind sousa that sounds WONDERFULL !
I'm now playing brass..........that should tell you somthing!
If youre ever in SANTA CRUZE CALIFORNIA let me know
and I'll let you try it out.
