Really!!! I have never heard anyone play a 981 who sounded bright. You might try another mouthpiece selection, or spend more time practicing on the Eb. It may be less a matter of timbre and more a choice of balanced abilities. With the proper approach, the Besson you own could easily carry it's own in your ensemble and please the ears of your fellow musicians.

You might want to take a tune which you believe you play equally well on both BBb and Eb and play that tune for a 3rd party sitting out in the hall. It may very well be that the Miraphone works better, but I am suspicous.

BTW, try to use a 3rd party who is NOT a low brass player. Low brass players tend to have tainted ears for this type of experiment and sometimes lean towards a different tuba blend than say a horn or clarinet player.
