At the Knoxville TubaChristmas last weekend, I was fortunate enough to be allowed a honk on a really sweet Alex. This was only the third or fourth Alex I've seen, and the first I've played. Everyone always raves about their sound, which I can understand after playing it. What I hadn't heard (or seen on previous Alexes) was the inverted valve system. Is this normal on an Alex, or is it some extremely clever custom work? The valve throw was about the same as a trumpet, and about as fast. It also had French Horn spats. If this is normal, why haven't the other tuba makers jumped ALL OVER this design? This design seems so simple, and the throw was less than half of what my Piggy has.
