There seems to be no way to separate the science from art as long as the artist uses materials or equipment to produce a work. The painter grinds pigments with tools, the photographer mixes chemicals, the musician manipulates a device to produce sounds. The difference is that it is an artist's intent to evoke an emotional response, while a purely scientific endevour may produce a result that only evokes emotion amongst other sceintists. Hmmm, if I publish a scholarly paper with no other intent than to evoke emotion among my colleagues does that make me an artist..... Gaaaaaa!
