Hi Jay,
Wow, you really did grasp the concept of a gap in the receiver area. To experiment with your horn, you can wrap a thin piece of paper around the shank of the mpc. It will sit out a little further. On horns like the Rudy, where you are actually putting the mpc directly into a leadpipe, the results are not as dramatic as a receiver. You never create a straight chamber. You will be just bringing the end of the mpc further back from the venturi (point where the shank taper ends and the pipe begins to expand into the tuba). All players require a different feel to their articulation. This is one of the ways to adjust the horn to match the individual player.
Some very agressive players will always prefer a leadpipe / receiver setup where the mpc actually sits in a leadpipe. To those of you who never liked the way a Yamaha YCB-822 played, you should try one with an Adjustable Gap Receiver compared to the mpc fitting in the leadpipe with just a sleeve that it has. A totally different feel.
Matt
