On the old 188-5u I had low F was one of the best notes on the horn! However, it is played 5-2-3 (2-3 combo fith valve). Soft, loud, short, long, the note was always solid. I have also played a 186-5u with the same qualities. The 186 BBb I owned had a great low F fingered 1-3. Fourth valve sucked for low F. For some reason, VMI (including B&S) horns seem to need a little finessing on the fifth valve notes. On the pistons, the huge bore and feel of the fifth valve demands an immediate slowing of the airspeed. On the Mirafone's (and also the MW32 I now own), the low register just takes the same air column with the change in embouchure. I tend to enjoy horns with the same bore through the cluster, especially in the low register. Horns with expanding bores tend to require a change in thinking, which in my continued laziness seem to fall out of favor (like my old VMI 6/4).
