Not to restart a well trotten thread, but just to cast a sideview on traditions in a European country a quote from the classified section of the Brass Bulletin II-2000:

Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig

Tubist/in mit verpl. zur Kontrabasstuba in B & zum Cimbasso.

(Tubasplayer (male/female) with obligation to play contrabass tuba in BBb & cimbasso)

Translation by me. As I read the text the smaller tuba (in F) is tacitly understood as the main instrument.

However I did find it most interesting, that the BBb is, what is asked for as the contrabass.
