There is a definite tradition in Germany, but exceptions may be found. A certain tubist there whom I spoke to on a couple of occasions was quite successful, teaching at two hochschule fuer musik, had a brass quintet, and did a lot of opera orchestra work. For his orchestra audition, he was told that F tuba was the required instrument, he said OK and proceeded to use his Boosey & Hawkes Eb, and got the job. The audition committee liked what they heard, and that's what was most important.
