Despite what you may have heard, even the biggest, darkest F tuba will have difficulty replicating the sound of most CCs. CCs (depending on size) have enormous depth and sound and playing in the lower register delivers much more sound than on almost any F tuba (although many F tubas have great clarity in the lower register). It basically comes down to a different tambre of sounds. CC tuba usually fits the orchestra and most bands pretty well and are used to SUPPORT large ensembles (although it can be used for soloing... I played all of VW Concerto w/ a band on a Mirafone 186). F tuba is mainly used for soloing, quintet, and high orchestral excerpts (Bydlo, Petrouchka, Symphony Fantastique, Hungarian March, etc). The sound of a CC is mainly used for middle and low orchestral works (Bruckner, Mahler, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams (symphonies), Strauss, Sibelius, Wagner, etc). What it all boils down to is this: have you ever tried to play Prokofiev's 5th with an orchestra on F tuba? Did it give as much support as CC?
