I disagree. Remember that in a trombone the bore is cylindrical so the size of the tubing doesn't change whether you use valves or slide. The original question dealt with finding where a pitch centered without using the slide, which is (or should be) used dynamically to correct the intonation of the pitch for normal playing. If you want to tune the horn vs. tuning the slide you need to find out where your instrument lies in it's "open" state. Everything else can be handled from there.
