"They" say that CC makes sharp key signatures easier--I don't believe it. The trouble with the key is just unfamiliarity, he needs more practice in that key, regardless of the horn he uses. Seeing C# when you're used to seeing Db for the same note will throw you off if it's not ingrained in your head.

If he takes the horn to school, be sure he's got a hard case that can be locked. High school students (in general) don't seem to get the notion of "property" when it comes to tubas, if they can kick it or dent it in some other way, they will.

I'd suggest, regardless, taking the horn back and forth. For me at least constant familiarity with one horn is an essential part of rehearsal. There will be differences in feel, tuning, and toher things besides fingerings.

Congrats on the Getzen; the horn will serve him well his whole life.
