I like playing jazz on piston valves because that's what I like (and that's what I have). I feel like I can move my fingers faster on piston valves. Having said that, I've heard some amazingly hip playing on rotary valve tubas. Sam Pilafian, Richard Perry, John Stevens, Dan Perantoni and Winston Morris' stuff comes to mind. Speaking very generally, I think equipment matters less than the imagination and technical skills of the person behind it.
