The tuba used by Mr. Jacobs in the 1951 Kubelik recording was a double tuba BBb/F, so he did at least have the advantage of F tuba partials. That takes nothing away from it. Mr. Jacobs declined Bydlo under Reiner for the 1957 RCA recording, but Bob Lambert gave it such a deep and powerful tone on his Boosey & Hawkes euphonium, that many of us assumed it was Jake until told otherwise. Jake returned to Bydlo for the Ozawa recording ca. 1966 or so, but was sabotaged by an off-mike sounding mix. RCA (BMG) may be able to redeem itself when it reissues this recording in it's new High Performance series.
