If you're copying orchestral parts which are not in the public domain, for personal reference, that shouldn't cause you any guilt. If you copy any music which is in the public domain, which could be purchased, by which you could compensate the publisher for publishing it, you are in effect, robbing the publisher. I don't have actual figures for this, but I have heard there is concern in the music publishing business about students copying public domain materials, solo and chamber music from the classical repertoire, not to tide themselves through short term emergencies, but for the pure purpose of avoiding PAYING for them. Crime may be too strong a word, but if you feel that as a musician, you might like to be paid to perform, it stands to reason the publisher should be paid for providing your materials. Even if you're an unpaid amateur or a student who hasn't reached the professional level, it's not up to the music publisher to subsidize your hobby or your education.
