I don't know what they cost, but I've played both a Bb and an Eb; yes they were playable and if you really can't afford anything else....ok; but for equivalent money I would recommend to a student to buy a used better-quality tuba than a new St. Pete. To be fair, I'd recommend them way before one of the Chinese tubas FS out there. But I found the tone quality to be very poor compared to tubas made from a different metal. The Eb was really, really stuffy, which can be overcome with practice but might put some people off. I'm not a Bb player so I can't comment on the playability of that one.

Have you ever played one of the "standards" like a 186? If not, you might be surprised at the difference. A fine instrument, as opposed to a playable instrument, can make a huge difference.
