Last I checked, BMW's (some of the models) are made in Beautiful Alabama!

You do have to pay a luxury tax on some of them however, as a gift from some of our legislators.

Problem is is that your run-of-the-mill Ford uses parts from something like 27 countries. So that Ford can make them cheaper. Even with a duty/tariff associated. Plus most american cars are made with foreign steel. Mr. Bush put a heavy tariff on that to encourage internal use of steel to bolster the U.S.Steel corp and others.

BTW, the tariffs on those tubas are only a few hundred dollars, about the same a the price as a wood case. The "inflation" comes from the fact that there is only ONE importer of these tubas in the entire country. And blame that on the folks in Switzerland thinking with a traditionaly "european" mentality when it comes to a nation. But when it comes down to it, we really only need 1-3 importers of any given tuba brand in the US, regardless.

We have people in the US who can build products on par with those from other countries, however, it would propably cost MORE due to higher quality of life and trying to maintain it here in th US. I'm not knocking that, only informing. If you want a tuba on par with a hirsbrunner type instrument built here in America, give Matt Walters a call. He could theoretically, given the parts and the time, build you the same thing. It would probably cost about the same.
