Thanks for this imput guys. I talked to my student and his teacher. Some of you feel that my student does not want to march, but I don't think that's it, he is still willing (very much so) to march with perhaps a bass drum or tenor drums, but he was simply (and his father, teacher) about some possilbe damage to his playing ability.
But Thank you all for your responses! I will take the material given here into consideration and try to come up with a solution that best serves both the student and my ensemble.
