Testing Out Horns--HELP!!!

My folks have just recently offered to get me a horn when the time is right (read: after taxes). After having some conversations with various people who "know their schtuff," I want to go out and test out some horns before my parents shell out money for a horn that will last me a long time. I apologize if what I say sounds a little "rude," but my parents don't see any reason to travel and allow me to test out instruments and just buy a horn locally or online at random. My other problem is that there aren't any major horn dealers up in the Portland area, and the closest places are in California and Michigan. I'd love to get out to at LEAST Custom and Brasswind, and, if possible, Brook Mays, to get a good selection. I'd like my teacher to have a discussion with them on this particular subject here soon (after our next lesson, whenever we schedule one), but are there any words of advice for the time being?

Thanx!
