I think that the first thing I notice about an Alex when I play it is the sound. Not really big and fuzzy, but there is a certin ring to the sound of a real good Alex. Yes, I have played a few that had awful intonation. But some with good intonation are out there, far and few maybe, and these are the keepers.

I think that a big reason Alex tubas get such a bad rap about the intonation is because if the horn has it all, Why sell it? The better examples of Alex tubas (or any make for that matter) aren't going to be sold often, if at all.

I would still get an Alex if the intonation was workable, and the sound, to me, was wonderful.
