I think the only reason for Alexander's intonation reputation is the fact that people keep trying to play them with mouthpieces that weren't designed specifically for that horn. I had the fortune of coming across two Alex BBb's last year, and also came across an old Alexander mouthpiece. With any of my regular mouthpieces the intonation was barely workable... 5th partial, in particular, being more than 30 cents flat. With the Alex mouthpiece, though, the horns play as well in tune as any tuba I've ever played.
