So, the "needs" of the many out-weigh the needs of the one in this case?
Your reasoning would get you a big fat "F" in your Logic class in college,
but then you're probably one of those diploma-mill "teachers" who had no clue
what to do with the rest of your life, and so decided to "teach."
Your defensive attitude will do more to undermine your precious program
than any helpful advice to a student "from outside" EVER will!
If you truly believe the advice students seek in a place like this BBS
is a threat to your program, why not try to outlaw YOUR student's access
to this BBS? See how far THAT would get you in keeping your paycheck.
Despite the fact that students in your system prolly learn lots of things,
When you boil it all down it sounds like you'd prefer to sacrifice one kid's
dream to minimize your fear of losing your program funding. This is EXACTLY
the reason why I advised that young man to make his OWN decision.
If a kid choses that line it takes more balls than either I or you have,
if he was in your school it'd mean NO band classes in HS at all,
and instead playing evenings in a community college band or something.
Guess what, the end result is you STILL lose a student!

"Pragmatism" in music programs now-a-days often is little more than
fear-based management at it's finest, your last post
is an excellent example of why real teachers think LONG and hard
about going into the field now-a-days. Your attitude
doesn't foster dreams and accomplishment, it discourages them!
I am not surprised you remain anonymous in your post,
as even this average musician can see that your students
are more a fodder for your personal security
than unique individuals with (sometimes) extraordinary needs.
Sorry you can't or don't want to make the hard decisions.
I hope the next Sumner E. isn't in your system.
