I've had experience with both, and found the sound quality to be about the same, but I still have questions. That is....I don't like the sound quality of either one, and I'm wondering if it is the mike that was used (same model mike on both.) "Everyone" recommends the AT822, which was used....but in a recording studio a year ago, using $100 mikes and direct input to a hard drive....we got much better results than with either the MD or the DAT and the AT822. The sound quality is just not there; it is dead sounding. I also got better results with an old Tascam multitrack cassette recorder and a cheap vocal mike, in terms of sound quality.
