Somehow it seems to be related to the proportion of conical to cylindrical tubing in the instrument along with the size of the throat. In trumpets, trombones, and horns, the false note is a fourth below the 2nd partial. In most tubas, it's a fifth below. In my Cerveny 601 CC (a big horn with a really huge throat) it's a bit below that, an F so flat it's almost an E. This is the only tuba I've played with a really poor false tone, too; I've played much smaller horns with far better false tones.

Have any other owners of really big horns had a similar experience?
