If you're playing bass 'bone (like I am next week) and you take some time to play around with the various combinations of valves and slide positions so you can play some of the more difficult passages without having to move your arm at the speed of light you'll notice that the A on the top line of the bass clef staff can be played in 6th positon which means it can be played in first position with the F trigger engaged. On my bass 'bone it is posssible to play a Bb concert scale without moving the slide, just the two valves and only once on that scale do I need to engage them both at once. It's kind of like knowing all of the alternate fingerings on a tuba; they do come in handy sometimes.

So, if you want to tune your trombone to A with the concertmaster or oboe you just depress the F trigger and keep the slide in first position.
