That's a great point. This is one of the reasons I went for the Meinl-Weston cimbasso rather than any of the other choices. Most everyone I talked to told me that the other brands of cimbassi (Orsi, Rudy Meinl, etc.) played a bit brighter and smaller than the MW. Everybody told me that the MW played and sounded more like a tuba than the others. While that held a certain appeal to me because, after all, I am a tuba player, it also made sense when considering that today's trombone sounds considerably darker than the horns or Verdi's era. The key word for me in all this is "blend". Verdi obviously had this in the forefront of his thinking and picking the current cimbasso that blends best with today's trombone seemed like the best choice. So far, I'm happy with the choice I've made because my horn blends very well with the section I play with.
