I wonder if people on this list could comment on relacquered horns.
Does their sound change all that much? Is the value of the instrument diminished a great deal? I know that some sax collectors shun relacquered saxes.
I'm considering buying a 1940s Conn Ladyface sousaphone, BBb, but I suspect it's been relacquered. The finish looks too shiny, and the seller said that the engraving looked a "little soft". It does have valves in fine shape, and it comes with neck, bits, two mouthpieces, and lyre, so it's a player.
Should relacquered horns be avoided at all costs, or is it of little importance?
