Precisely why I think the bell should be suspended and not touching anything. It doesn't have enough mass to destroy itself, only if it is the only rigid point of contact with the case, as was my recent experience with a very well-regarded and well-known custom tuba case that I lost $300 on when I returned it as being insufficient for the use for which it was intended.

I do like the form-fit foam idea (they've done some version of that in ski boots for decades, to fit all those weird feet) ... but I still would suspend the bell in air, not in foam where it could be torqued by the weight of the tuba.
