Software – Musitek Smart Score V 2.03

Piece – Violin part for 3rd movement Brahms Horn Trio in Eb

1st page – 98 measures, Eb, 6/8 time

Original - International Edition, very clean - actually pristine condition.

First scan. Smart score recognized the 3 beamed eith note patterns as triplets. When I put the MIDI output file into Sibelius this caused the anticipated error of adding two additional eighth rests per measure.

I re-scanned, specifying no tuplet recognition

Resulting scan seems quite usable, quite good recognition of notes, but many missing or mis-recognized slurs, ties, etc, many dotted quarters etc recognized as straight quarters etc, many staccato dots missing

The following may sound like a terrible result, but actually I think I could clean this page up quite nicely in 10 to 20 minutes if I were familiar with the editing tools in Smart Score. I think I could get the whole movement cleaned up in around 45 minutes or so - less than it would take me to re-enter although a real Sibelius keyboard entry shark could probably do it in less than an hour. I think the result is what I would consider quite usable and better than I've seen from some other packages.

If I get some time I'll run the same movement through Neuratron Photo Score and Sharp Eye.

Detailed results................

First “upbeat” measure recognized correctly

Measures 5 and 6 – recognized as a beamed set of 5 eighth notes instead of as 2 beamed sets of 3. One note was missing. It was very easy to fix this with a couple of mouse clicks.

Several “accent” marks missing in this line

Measure 8 thru 15 almost completely correct including slur in measure 15. Only errors were two cases of dotted quarters being recognized as straight quarters, “mf” missing in measure 9

Slurs missing in measures 17 18 19

Eighth note in measure 20 misrecognized as dotted eighth (this would make a mess in Sibelius if not caught here)

F# in measure 20 misrecognized as F, A natural accidental missed. “courtesy” natural on F in measure 21 misrecognized as G

Dotted quarters in measure 22 and 23 – dot not picked up

Slur across measure 23 – 24 missed

Extraneous dot on eighth note in measure 24

Dotted quarter F tied to quarter misrecognized as undotted G tied to G

Dotted quarter note A natural in measure 51 completely missing
