I was reading in Bevan's new book that Besson has a reputation for using an extremely small mouthpiece for tuning their instruments, and that the first thing one has to do with a new horn is remove some tubing to allow for a decently large mouthpiece.

I wonder if this account jibes with the experiences of the folks on the list.

It fits with my own experience. My Imperial plays about 15 cents flat consistently with a 3G mouthpiece (about the same size as a Wick 4). After considerable warm-up of the horn and the player, I can bring it up to pitch, with the tuning slide all the way in. It would be nice to have some adjustment room, especially for groups that play sharp.

But I'm loathe to shorten the main slide if there is another explanation. This horn is sufficiently "experienced" to admit all sort of alternative possibilities.

(A detailed search of the archives revealed nothing.)

Any thoughts?
