Who was your mentor?

We always seem to have this discussion about the Letterman List for tuba schools, and it always seems to degenerate to some level of mudslinging against this prof or that player. That's not what I am after here. Please do not do that.

What I would like to know is what tuba teacher that you have studied with has had the most impact on you as a musician and as a person, and why?

I have two: Mark Mordue opened my eyes to the world of the tuba outside of a little bitty high school band, and I have been hooked ever since. The other is Sande MacMorran, who is still teaching me the Zen of sound. Of course, I'm comparing my piggy to his Alex, so it's already an uphill battle. Maybe someday I too can walk the rice paper...

Steve
