Time and time again I have showed that there are no simple 4 or 5 valve tubas that play in tune as well as the double or compensating tubas. Both double and compensating tubas have been available for more than 60 years in just about all keys. In addition, many of the old US tubas had the 3 + 1 arrangement of the valves. If one wants to be a slide tubist using more positions than the slide trombone and has a great ear might be able to play a Willson Eb in tune as well as a double or compensating tuba on slow passages. On the other hand try to play an intune fast 16th note scale going up and down from Eb below the bass clef staff to Eb two octaves above on a simple 5 valve instrument. Also try the chromatic scale. I contend that no one can pull slides that fast without slopping up the sound.

We clearly have a case of hero worship transferred to an obsolete kind of instrument!
